2007 Donor Reception

THANK YOU

The UBC Faculty of Law is very pleased to have hosted its Annual Donor Reception at the Law Courts Inn on November 6. This event allows us to honour and thank donors who support prizes, scholarships, bursaries, and faculty research. It also gives them a chance to meet the beneficiaries of their gifts.

By contributing to prizes, scholarships, bursaries and fellowships for our undergraduate and graduate students, our donors help us to ensure that highly qualified candidates will continue to have access to legal education. Our donors also provide critical support for excellence in teaching by funding curricular innovations, moots, and technological and building enhancements. Finally, donor support has been a key factor in gaining national support and global recognition for our faculty research.  The Faculty is very grateful for the continuing generosity of our donors.  We want to thank you for recognizing the financial burden on students and for supporting tomorrow’s law school graduates.

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2008

2008 marks the beginning of the Centenary Celebrations for the University. It has been 100 years since the University Act was signed to establish UBC. The Act was drafted by Vancouver law firm Richards Buell Sutton LLP, a generous contributor to the UBC Law Building Project. UBC’s aim during this first year of Centenary Celebrations is to establish 100 new student awards across the University. We hope that many of them will be in the law faculty.

Second year LL.B. student Angela Escobar gave a speech on behalf of all student award recipients to thank our donors for their support of student awards.

This year Angela will receive the Ted le Nobel Memorial Scholarship; the Doris Curtis Memorial Scholarship; the McCarthy Tétrault Leadership Award; and the Law Students’ Legal Advice Program Pozer Award.

Ronald Kakungulu (right) was the recipient of a Law Foundation Graduate Fellowship to aid him during his studies towards an LL.M. He is pictured here with Naayeli E. Ramirez E. (left) who is completing a Ph.D. at UBC Law. Naayeli received a Ph.D. Tuition Fee Award this year. Thank you to all our donors who support the graduate program - these awards make a huge difference at UBC law and in an era of rapidly increasing educational costs, many highly deserving graduate students would not be able to pursue graduate studies without your support.

We were delighted that three representatives of the Law Foundation of British Columbia were present at the Law Award Donor Reception this year.  Mr. Wayne Robertson, Executive Director; Ms. karima budhwani, Program Director; and Mr. Warren Wilson, QC, Chair of the Law Foundation’s Board of Governors were available to congratulate many student award winners who had received support from the Foundation.

These awards encourage greater representation in law school, attract top applicants to our programs and reward outstanding academic performance.  We would like to thank the Law Foundation of BC for their generous support.
