This interdisciplinary field encompasses all efforts to understand:

• law in its social context,


• the contributions of law to "the social",


• the ways in which social forces interact with the legal realm.

The field consists of a number of more or less well established "law and" areas of enquiry -- law and economics, law and history, literature, psychology, educational studies, geography, feminist studies, sociology, anthropology, politics, post-colonialism, and so on. It is more than this too, however: interdisciplinary "wholes" are greater than sums of parts.
