Budgeting

Students should budget before and throughout their degree to predict costs and when money will be needed. Thorough financial planning will help avoid unexpected shortfalls. More budgeting resources are available at Planning Resources and at CanLean’s useful Financial Planner.

Funding Timeline – Entering Year

Approximate dates for financial assistance programs and recommended guidelines for financial planning timeline are shown below.

WHEN	TASKS
January - May	Figure out both the program costs (Tuition, Fees and Books) and your Living expenses Calculate your current resources: e.g. savings, support from family, and confirmed awards Build a budget, and determine whether you have a shortfall Research financial assistance options: student loans, bursaries, work study Investigate lines of credit and begin the application process
June	Apply for student loans before June 30 to be considered for bursaries and work study and to receive funds in time for September If you are eligible, apply before June 30 for Affiliation Scholarships, Affiliation Bursaries, and Aboriginal Awards.
July	Work Study applications open July 15 Apply immediately; positions are limited
October	Awards for Students with Disabilities application opens on August 15 Application deadline is October 15
Year Round	Continuing students: look into scholarships requiring an application. Deadlines vary Look for part-time work using UBC Law Career Services, the Law Students’ Legal Advice Program and UBC Career Services Watch for financial workshops or seek advice.
