Environmental Law Negotiation Competition
Forty-two participants recently took part in the Law Students’ Environmental Law Group’s fifth annual Environmental Law Negotiation competition. The event, held on November 14, was made possible by volunteers from both the law school and the legal community. Fourteen judges from the environmental legal community volunteered their time and Assistant Professor Natasha Affolder and Professor Ian Townsend-Gault acted as judges. Law student Virginia Richards was the competition’s main organizer, assisted by members of the Environmental Law Group and fellow law students Jon Boersma, Alison Van De Kraats, Gillian Piggot, Claire Stilwell, Bekkah Coburn, Megan Alexander, and Jacqueline Kotyk.

The University of British Columbia has appointed UBC Law Graduate Shirley Nakata (’88) as the university’s first Ombudsperson for Students. On Friday November 7, eight students competed in the Peter Burns mock trial at the UBC Faculty of Law. Students paired up to “play” counsel in R. v. Landry, a trial by jury involving various charges including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle while street racing, an offence added to the Criminal Code in 2006. more...

Associate Director of the First Nations Legal Studies Program
UBC Law is delighted to announce the appointment of Andrea Hilland as Associate Director of the First Nations Legal Studies Program.
Hilland comes to the Faculty from West Coast Environmental Law, where she worked on forestry law and land use planning. Before that she was a staff lawyer (and later managing lawyer) with EAGLE (Environmental-Aboriginal Guardianship through Law and Education) for several years.
She is a graduate of UBC Law, articled at Sierra Legal Defense Fund, and was called to the bar in 2003.
