UBC Takes Home the Cup at Labour Arbitration Competition

The UBC team of second year law students Natasha Jategaonkar and Glen Tedham won the cup at the Mathews Dinsdale & Clark Canadian Labour Arbitration Competition held in Toronto this past weekend (January 28th and 29th, 2012). Teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Western, Queens, Osgoode, Toronto, Dalhousie and UBC argued for and against the dismissal of a school teacher who offended (or not) on Facebook. After a round-robin among the eight schools on Saturday, the judges picked Dalhousie and UBC as the top two teams. They argued the last level on Sunday, with UBC coming out on top.

Professor Emeritis Jim MacIntyre served as the team's faculty advisor. A number of arbitrators also provided valuable assistance to the team by participating in practice sessions. Thanks go to Ryan Anderson (a previous UBC winner of the Cup) who served as co-coach and to Don Jordan, QC; Paul Fairweather, Wayne Moore, Bruce Grist, Rod Germaine, Emily Burke, Julie Nichols, Sebastien Anderson, Joan Gordon, Kim Thorne, John B. Hall and Jennifer Russell for their incredible efforts serving as mentors. The Faculty would also like to thank the firm of Harris & Co and Victory Square Law Office for their continued financial support of our students in this competition.

The Mathews, Dinsdale and Clark LLP Canadian Labour Arbitration Competition takes place between eight two-person teams from eight law schools across Canada. This is UBC's 11th year participating in this moot.
