Pictured above: (left to right) Dean George F. Curtis, The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce plans to honour founding Dean George Curtis in the new Law building. The newly-named George F. Curtis Dean's and Student Government Suite will house deans and administrative offices as well as offices and meeting space for the Law Student's Society. The suite reflects both Dean Curtis's extraordinary achievements as the founding Dean of the Faculty as well as his emphasis on the close connections between faculty and students. Dr. George F. Curtis, OC, OBC, QC served as dean from the founding of the Faculty in 1945 until 1971, and throughout his retirement Dean Emeritus Curtis was still actively involved with the Faculty. He continued to address every incoming class and meet individually with students to offer his support, insight and encouragement. Dean Mary Anne Bobinski observes, "Dean Curtis' service and profound commitment to UBC Law serves as an inspiration to the entire Faculty. His vision, energy and dedication propelled the Faculty of Law to its current place as an internationally renowned centre for legal education and research. His influence on the more than 10,000 UBC Law alumni in Canada and around the world is profound and far reaching." In addition to his work at UBC, Dean Curtis's contributions to UBC, B.C. and Canada were recognized by his being named to the Order of B.C. and Order of Canada as well as through his receipt of honorary degrees from Dalhousie University, the University of Saskatchewan, the University of New Brunswick and the University of British Columbia. Dean Emeritus Curtis passed away peacefully on October 23, 2005 at the age of 99. His passing was a tremendous loss to the Faculty. The new George F. Curtis Dean's and Student Government Suite honours UBC Law's deep and continuing attachment to this extraordinary teacher, scholar and academic visionary.
