UBC Alumni Appointed to the Bench in British Columbia and Newfoundland and Labrador
The Honourable Gregory T.W. Bowden was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia on October 2, 2009. Mr. Justice Bowden graduated from UBC Law in 1970. He served an associate lawyer at Ladner Downs from 1970 to 1972, and was an associate and a partner at Thorsteinssons from 1972 to 1977. He was a partner at Birnie, Sturrock & Bowden from 1977 to 1986 and a partner at Lawson, Lundell, Lawson & McIntosh from 1986 to 2004. He was appointed provincial Queen’s Counsel in 1996 and was appointed Judge of the Provincial Court of British Columbia in May 2004. Mr. Justice Bowden will sit in Vancouver and replaces Madam Justice K.M. Gill, who resigned on June 1, 2009.
The Honourable D. Mark Pike was appointed Chief Judge of the Provincial Court of Newfoundland and Labrador on September 25, 2009. Chief Judge Pike earned a commerce degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland and graduated from UBC Law in 1983. In 1996 he was appointed a Master of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador. On October 6, 2008 Mr. Pike was appointed provincial Queen’s Counsel and on November 17, 2008 he was elevated to the bench as Associate Chief Judge of the Provincial Court of Newfoundland and Labrador.
