UBC Alumni Receive British Columbia Judicial Appointments

Nine UBC alumni have received judicial appointments in 2009. Elizabeth A. Bennett was appointed to the British Columbia Court of Appeal, while Hope C. Hyslop, Bruce M. Greyell, Robert J. Sewell, John S. Harvey, Peter G. Voith, Frits Erik Verhoeven, were all appointed to the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

Madam Justice Bennett graduated from UBC Law in 1981, and was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1982. Madam Justice Bennett was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1994 and was appointed a judge of the British Columbia Supreme Court in 1997.

Madam Justice Hyslop received her LL.B from UBC Law in 1966. She was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1967. Madam Justice Hyslop practiced law in private practice from 1967 to 2003 and was appointed Master of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 2003.

Mr. Justice Greyell received his Bachelor of Laws from UBC Law in 1967. He was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1968. Mr. Justice Greyell was an associate and partner with Braidwood, Nuttall and MacKenzie subsequently Braidwood, MacKenzie Brewer and Greyell, from 1967 to 1991. He was then a partner with Greyell MacPhail from 1991 to 2006 and a partner from RoperGreyell from 2006 to 2009.

Mr. Justice Sewell graduated from UBC Law in 1971, and was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1972. Mr. Justice Sewell was an associate in Shrum, Liddle and Hebenton from 1972 to 1974 and a partner from 1974 to 1989. He was then a partner in McCarthy Tétrault from 1989 to 2009. Mr. Justice Sewell has developed an expertise in civil commercial, litigation and insolvency.

Mr. Justice Harvey received his Bachelor of Laws from UBC Law in 1977.   He was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1978.  Mr. Justice Harvey has been an associate in Braidwood and Company from 1978 to 1982 and a partner from 1983 to 1989. He was also associate counsel in Boughton Peterson Yang and Anderson from 1990 to 1991 and a partner in Scarborough Herman & Harvey since 1991 to 2009.   Mr. Justice Harvey has developed an expertise in family law and related issues.

Mr. Justice Voith graduated from UBC Law in 1980. He then received a Master of Laws from Columbia University in 1983 and a Master of Laws from the University of Cambridge in 1984. He was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1981.  Mr. Justice Voith worked at Ladner Downs from 1980 to 1982, with Davis & Company from 1984 to 2002, with Hunter Voith from 2002 to 2005 and was one of the founders of Hunter Litigation Chambers since 2005. Mr. Justice Voith’s main practice areas are civil and administrative law.

Mr. Justice Verhoeven graduated from UBC Law in 1982, and was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1983.  Mr. Justice Verhoeven was an associate in Edwards, Kenny and Bray, LLP from 1983 to 1990 and a partner from 1990 to 2009. Mr. Justice Verhoeven’s main practice areas are civil litigation with an emphasis on employment, construction and administrative and commercial matters of all kinds.
