INTERNATIONAL CLIENT COUNSELLING COMPETITION
The International Client Counselling Competition has been in existence for 30 years. UBC has participated for 20 years and has a very high success rate, having represented Canada at the International Competition seven times and having won three of those times.
The team consists of three members, two of whom compete in a client interview scenario, judged by a panel of three. This is set up as an initial client interview lasting approximately half an hour and each year focuses on a different area of law. The third team member is an alternate and support for the competing member, and in each year one team member carries over to compete in the following year so that there is a continuity and experience gained through this practice.
The tryouts take place in the fall and the team is selected by December, with the Regional Competition taking place towards the end of February. Because of the international aspect of the competition, the successful Canadian team may travel to various locations in the world. For the past 15 years, he team has been coached by Doug Cochran, a practicing lawyer in Vancouver.
