How to Apply to the First Nations Program

Applicants with Aboriginal ancestry may apply as discretionary applicants in the First Nations category.  Aboriginal applicants should contact the Associate Director of the First Nations Legal Studies Program, Andrea Hilland, at hilland@law.ubc.ca or (604) 822-2177 as early as possible to discuss their application.

All applicants, including Aboriginal applicants, are required to:

  • Submit an application form, available online at: https://apps.law.ubc.ca/application/welcome.asp .
  • Write the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT). Applicants must register to write the LSAT at least 1 month in advance of the LSAT test date. Further details are available on the Law School Admission Council website at www.lsac.org
  • Arrange for all post-secondary transcripts to be sent to the UBC Faculty of Law.
  • In addition to the basic requirements, Aboriginal applicants must also submit:
  • A biographical essay (750 words or 2 pages double-spaced).  Biographical essays may include details such as connections with First Nations communities, work history, community work, academic achievements, and other achievements.
  • Two reference letters. The reference letters can be sent directly from the referees to admissions, or applicants can send them to admissions. The reference letters must be in sealed envelopes, signed over the seal by the referee.
  • Proof of Aboriginal ancestry.  All Aboriginal applicants are required to establish their Aboriginal ancestry by providing a photocopy of their status card, Metis card, or a chart tracing their line of Aboriginal ancestry.
