Visitor Categories
UBC Law also welcomes self-funded visiting faculty and visiting scholars. Visiting appointments are generally between one month and one year, but shorter and longer visits are possible.
Visiting faculty includes professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and lecturers who have continuing appointments at other universities or academic institutions. Visiting faculty members are usually on sabbatical and are expected to return to their home institutions at the end of the visit.
Visiting scholars are generally graduate students from other universities who wish to conduct research at UBC Law. The UBC Graduate Student International Research Mobility Award provides up to $1500 for graduate students at other institutions to conduct research at UBC. Information and application details are available here.
If you are a graduate student at another institution and wish to take courses while you are visiting UBC, then you must apply as a visiting graduate student.
Detailed information on the different visitor categories at UBC is available here.

All visitors require a full-time UBC Law faculty member as sponsor. If you have not identified a sponsor, then please review the faculty profiles to identify faculty members who are working in your field of interest and area of research. Send an e-mail (including your research plan and current curriculum vitae) to a faculty member working in your area and ask if they might be willing to act as your faculty sponsor.
Application Form and Supplementary Materials
Once you have secured a faculty sponsor, please complete the Visiting Faculty / Visiting Scholar Application Form and send it to the address indicated on the form. In addition to the application form, please include the following supporting documents:

- for visiting scholars: letter from graduate program supervisor or employer on letterhead paper indicating program of study or employment
- copy of e-mail from a UBC Law faculty member confirming their willingness to act as the faculty sponsor
