Profile

Sharon Sutherland teaches primarily in the field of dispute resolution and supervises the Faculty's Externship program and Mediation Clinic. Professor Sutherland also practices as a professional mediator and mediation consultant.  She is a member of the BC Mediator Roster (Civil) and the BC Child Protection Mediator Roster and acts as Clinic Supervisor for the student-run CoRe Conflict Resolution Clinic.  Professor Sutherland mentors mediators in Child Protection, Small Claims and CoRe mediations, and is the mediation trainer for the Society of Notaries Public.

From 2006-2010, Professor Sutherland has worked with Mediate BC on a province-wide Child Protection Mediation Practicum aimed at increasing the number of child protection mediators in under-serviced parts of BC.  In her capacity as Manager of Development for this project, Professor Sutherland worked in partnership with a number of aboriginal communities throughout the province to develop community-based and culturally appropriate mediation training

In addition to her LL.M. in ADR, Professor Sutherland received her M.A. in Drama and Theatre Studies from the University of London, and has completed all work but her thesis towards a Ph.D. in Drama from the University of Toronto.  This theatrical background continues to inform her teaching and practice.  Professor Sutherland has recently completed a SSHRC-funded research project entitled Applications of Theatre to Conflict Resolution Pedagogy and Practice, which combined her work in theatre with her interests in both conflict resolution and teaching and learning.  As one aspect of this project, she launched the new academic journal Masks: The Online Journal of Law and Theatre, which can be viewed at http://masksjournal.com/wordpress/.  Professor Sutherland also publishes in the area of Law and Popular Culture, and will co-host the 5th bi-annual Slayage conference in Vancouver in 2012.
