Profile

My peripatetic academic career in the field of environmental law has spanned positions in law schools in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, as well as consultancy and community work in Kenya and Nepal.  At the University of British Columbia (UBC), I hold the Senior Canada Research Chair in Environmental Law & Sustainability and am Director of the law faculty's Centre for Law and the Environment. Also, in regard to my teaching responsibilities, I am Director of the Global Environmental & Resources Law Externship Program and coach UBC's environmental law moot teams.

Much of my scholarship over the past decade has focused on socially responsible investment and its regulation. I also dabble in a variety of other of research interests, including climate change law, Aboriginal peoples and the environment, and the history and theory of environmental law. My publications include the recent books Fiduciary Law and Responsible Investing (Routledge, 2013), Local Climate Change Law (Edward Elgar, 2012), Indigenous Peoples and the Law (Hart Publishing, 2009), Socially Responsible Investment Law (Oxford University Press, 2008), and Environmental Law for Sustainability (Hart Publishing, 2006). Global recognition of my work includes being awarded the Research Excellence Prize of the UN Principles for Responsible Investment Academic Network (in 2010), and jointly winning the Senior Scholar Prize of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law (in 2012).

In addition to my core responsibilities at the UBC Faculty of Law, I am an Adjunct Professor at the Macquarie University Law School (my alma mater) in Australia, a Faculty Associate of the UBC Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, and I participate in various academic and professional groups including the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law and the Canadian Business Ethics Research Network.

Aboriginal Legal Issues, Corporate Social Responsibility, Environmental Law and Policy, International and Transnational Law, Socially Responsible Investment.
