SWING SPACE GENERALLY
What is Swing Space?
Swing space is the general term the Faculty of Law uses to refer to its temporary accommodation while the new building is being constructed. It refers to all of the buildings the Faculty will occupy—not just the West Mall Swing Space Building (WMSSB).
The Faculty of Law will occupy space in the following UBC Law buildings: University Centre Lower Level, West Mall Swing Space Building, Annex 1, Annex 2, Mary Bollert Hall and Lower Mall Research Station.
A map which identifies the buildings the Faculty will occupy while in swing space can be found here:
Detailed floor plans with occupant information for each location can be found here:
Where is the Faculty of Law located?
Over the next two years, faculty, staff and students will be dispersed across the UBC campus. The Faculty likes to think that the heart and home of the Faculty of Law is the University Centre Lower Level (UCLL), where students will spend most of their time. This newly renovated space is between the Rose Garden and the Graduate Student Centre (Koerners) and below Sage Bistro.
UCLL is where the majority of law classes will be held during the swing period. It also contains social and lounge space for students, a café and the LSS offices. The Faculty of Law has exclusive use of this facility from September 1, 2009.
A map of UCLL can be found here:
Where are my classes going to be held?
Virtually all upper-year classes and half of the first-year classes are scheduled to be held in UCLL. The remainder of the classes will be held in two classrooms that the Faculty has leased in the West Mall Swing Space Building (WMSSB).
Where is the Law Library located?
The current Law Library (adjacent to the Curtis Building) will remain standing while construction occurs on the new building. The Library will operate as usual with the same hours and functions. The entrance to the Library will be through the main entrance door of the Curtis Building.
Where are my professors’ offices?
The majority of professors have shared office space on the 2nd and 5th floors of the West Mall Swing Space Building. A few professors will be located in the Lower Mall Research Station.
Detailed information about the location of each professor’s office space can be found here:
How do I contact law professors and staff?
All faculty and staff e-mail and phone numbers remain the same, as does the mailing address of the Faculty at 1822 East Mall. Contact information is available here:
Where do I find student organizations?
The LSS is located in room 177 of UCLL, the Centre for Feminist Legal and Law Review are located on the second floor of Mary Bollert Hall (near to UCLL), and LSLAP has moved to Annex 1. All other student organizations that previously had offices in Annex 1 remain there.
Where is the Fishbowl/Reception?
The Fishbowl (the beloved glass bowl reception in Curtis) will be demolished along with the rest of the Curtis Building. Swing space will effectively have two reception desks. The first will be in Lower Mall Research Station (where the Dean, Senior Administration, Finance, Development and Communications have offices). The second will be in UCLL Room 110B where Bryan Rangel, the Admin/AV Assistant, will be available from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. to answer student questions, assist with AV set up, and receive paper submissions.
STUDENT EXPERIENCE
How will the move to swing space affect my law school experience?
The administration, faculty and staff at the law school and the executive of the Law Students’ Society have been working hard to ensure that your law school experience in swing space is as good as or better than it was in Curtis. They are working to preserve the law school’s social and educational traditions and to enhance and support student learning and extracurricular activities.
What about bzzr-ups?
The LSS is working to maintain this important law school social tradition, and will update students when the details of bzzr-ups for the 2009-2010 academic year are finalized.
What are the building hours at UCLL and the West Mall Swing Space Building?
UCLL:
Monday - Thursday: 7:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Friday: 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Closed Weekends/Holidays
WMSSB, Rooms 105 and 107
Monday - Friday: 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Saturday: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and
Closed Weekends/Holidays
Will students have lockers in swing space?
Unfortunately, UCLL is unable to accommodate lockers for all students. There will be six lockers for students with mobility impairments, and students can contact Kaila Mikkelsen, Assistant Dean, Students, at mikkelsen@law.ubc.ca for permission to use one of these lockers.
Students who wish to have an on-campus locker can contact UBC REC, which offers locker rentals for students at the Student Recreation Centre (beside the bus loop): http://www.rec.ubc.ca/src/.
Note: If you have contents in a locker in the Curtis Building, you need to empty it immediately as the building locks will be changed shortly and the Faculty will no longer have access to Curtis.
Will there be enough power outlets in UCLL and the West Mall Swing Space Building to accommodate laptops?
There are more power outlets than in Curtis; however, it is recommended that students continue to bring a power bar/extension cord to class as there may not be a sufficient number of outlets for all students in every classroom.
Where do I park?
For classes in UCLL, you will want to park in the Rose Garden Parkade. The closest parkade to the West Mall Swing Space building is the West Parkade.
Where do I eat?
There is a café in the interaction/social area of UCLL. Additionally, Koerner’s, the graduate student pub, is next door, and there are numerous UBC food options within close walking distance.
How do I meet with my instructors? Will they have office hours?
As you may be aware, many of the instructors have shared office space, making private conversation difficult. However, your instructors do have access to meeting rooms in the WMSSB as well as bookable small classrooms in UCLL for office hours.
Where is the Distribution Centre?
All functions of the Distribution Centre have been transferred to the UBC Bookstore. Law students can purchase books and course materials from the Bookstore, where a special law section has been established.
I am a member of a student club. Where do I pick up my mail?
Initially, all student and club mail will be delivered to Annex 2 for pick-up. Once the Faculty moves into UCLL in September, delivery of mail directly to the LSS in UCLL for redistribution to students will be explored.
How do I book rooms in swing space?
To book classroom space in UCLL or the West Mall Swing Space Building for study groups or club meetings, send an e-mail to UBC Law Reception at reception@law.ubc.ca or make a room booking in person with Bryan Rangel in UCLL.
I need a room that is larger than the ones available in swing space. What do I do?
UCLL has 10 classrooms ranging in size from 10-73 seats. The WMSSB classrooms seat 47. If you need to book a larger space for an event, you will have to contact Classroom Services. As there are a limited number of large lecture theatres on campus, you are advised to put in your booking requests as soon as possible.
Contact Classroom Services at classroomservices@students.ubc.ca or on the web at
http://www.students.ubc.ca/facultystaff/bookings.cfm?page=rooms.
STUDENT SERVICES
Where are the student services staff located?
All of the staff that previously occupied the Student Services Centre space on the first floor of Curtis (the Assistant Dean of Students, Career Services, First Nations Legal Studies, Student Academic Services, Admissions and Graduate Studies) have moved to Annex 2. Annex 2 is the portable trailer located on the north side of the North Parkade, across Walter Gage Road (a.k.a. Military Road) from the Law library. Detailed directions to Annex 2 can be found here.
An occupant map of Annex 2 can be found here:
How do I meet with the Student Services staff I need to see?
Please drop by! Student Services is within 100 metres of the Law Library and most staff work between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
However, it is understood that students have busy schedules and may not always have the time to walk over to Annex 2. Student Services has an onsite office in Room 179 of UCLL. Various staff, including Career Services and the Assistant Dean, Students, will be having weekly office hours in this room during term time. The room will also be used during exams by the Academic Services staff to assist with the administration of exams.
Check out the information posted on the Student Services bulletin board in UCLL for information about office hours.
Where do I submit my papers in swing space?
All papers that are required to be submitted in hard copy (or to the Fishbowl) should be turned in to and date stamped by Bryan Rangel in Room 110B of UCLL. (For the month of August 2009, anything required to be turned into the Fishbowl should be handed in to the law reception desk at Lower Mall Research Station.)
Where can I access copies of the academic forms and where do I submit them?
Academic forms are available online at: http://www.law.ubc.ca/forms/index.html. In September, hard copies of all academic forms will be available for pick up in UCLL.
In September, all academic forms which previously would have been handed in to the Fishbowl (such as the Directed Research Authorization form) should be placed in the wooden drop-box in UCLL. The box will be emptied on a daily basis and the contents delivered to the Student Services staff in Annex 2. You are also welcome to hand in your forms in person to the appropriate staff person in Annex 2.
For August 2009, all forms should be submitted directly to Veronica Uy in Annex 2.
How do I request an exam or paper accommodation or deferral?
Any student requiring an exam or paper accommodation or deferral should contact Kaila Mikkelsen, Assistant Dean, Students in Annex 2 or by phone at (604) 822-6350 or mikkelsen@law.ubc.ca. All requests to write exams at the Disability Resource Centre should be directed to Susan Morin, Director, Student Academic Services in Annex 2.
Do not hand in deferral or accommodation forms to the UCLL Reception or drop box.
CAREER SERVICES OFFICE
Where is the Career Services Office located?
The Career Services Office (CSO) can be found in the UBC Faculty of Law Annex 2, located on Walter Gage Road (a.k.a. Military Road) across from the Law Library. Kerry Parker Smith is located in Office 103 and Pamela Cyr is located in Office 104. Tracy Wachmann, the Public Interest Coordinator, will be located in Annex 1 in Office 103C. She is available Monday through Wednesday during the summer.
How do I sign up for an appointment with a member of the CSO team?
Information regarding a new multi-purpose online system used for scheduling appointments (among other things) will be distributed in August. In the meantime, students may e-mail Program Assistant Gareth Coghlan (coghlan@law.ubc.ca) to set up an appointment with Kerry or Pam. Detailed instructions for doing so can be found at www.ubclawcareers.com.
Where can I access the CSO handouts?
Electronic copies of all CSO handouts can be downloaded from the UBC Law Career Services website at www.ubclawcareers.com. These handouts will later be uploaded to the new online system. Hard copies can be obtained from the Career Services Office in Annex 2.
Where can I view a calendar of upcoming deadlines and CSO seminars?
Upcoming CSO events can be viewed on the calendar at www.ubclawcareers.com.
Where do I purchase a Legal Careers Guide?
The UBC Legal Careers Guide can be purchased from the CSO in Annex 2 on Walter Gage Road. The cost is $10 for students and alumni of UBC Law. A digital copy can also be downloaded for free from www.ubclawcareers.com.
Where can I pick up the newest edition of Lexpert and Canadian Lawyer?
