Requirements for Graduation and Evaluation of Work J.D./MBA, J.D./MAPPS

FIRST YEAR REQUIRED COURSES (J.D./MBA, J.D./MAPPS)

All of the first-year courses of the regular J.D. program are compulsory.

Second Year Required Courses (J.D./MBA, J.D./MAPPS)

In the upper years, students must take five courses, one from each of the following lists:

  • Public Regulation: LAW 200 Aboriginal Peoples and Canadian Law, LAW 210 Administrative Law, LAW 220 Taxation I.
  • Private Regulation: LAW 230 Corporations I, LAW 240 Family Law, LAW 250 Trusts.
  • Procedure: LAW 260 Advanced Criminal Procedure, LAW 270 Civil Procedure, LAW 280 Evidence.
  • Law and Society Studies.  The contents of this list are determined based on available course offerings in a given year.
  • Legal Research and Writing: LAW 379/380 Externship, LAW 430 Advanced Legal Research, LAW 472 The Allan McEachern Course in Trial Advocacy, LAW 473 Appellate Advocacy, LAW 474 Trial Advocacy, LAW 483 Competitive Moots and Advocacy A, LAW 484 Competitive Moots Advocacy and Client Counseling B, LAW 486 Law Review, LAW 488/489 First Nations Legal Clinic, LAW 490 Clinical Criminal Law, and LAW 491 Law Students Legal Advice Program.

SEMINAR OR DIRECTED RESEARCH

A student must undertake, in either second or third year, at least one independent research project and submit a substantial paper embodying the results of this research. Taking a four-credit seminar will satisfy this obligation but students may also fulfill this obligation by completing a project, for at least four credits, of Directed Research.

J.D./MBA Full-Time Program:

Students in the combined J.D./MBA program must complete 86 credits in Law and 45 credits in the MBA Program.

J.D./MBA 2nd, 3rd and 4th Years:

All the requirements of the regular J.D./MBA 2nd and 3rd year program must be fulfilled, including compulsory courses, with only the following changes:

  • A total of 51 credits of 200, 300, 400 or 500-level Law courses must be taken over the two upper years.  The student is not eligible for the Faculty of Law non-Law option.
  • Law 220 (Taxation I) must be taken.  If the student has already received credit for Commerce 355 (Income Taxation) or its equivalent, another three credits of Law courses must be taken in substitution for Law 220.  Commerce 355 will be deemed equivalent to Law 220 for prerequisite purposes.
  • In addition, a minimum of 20 credits of elective Law courses must be chosen from a set of courses in the corporate, commercial or taxation areas that will be designed from year to year by the Joint Degrees Committee.
  • The Joint Degrees Committee must approve the student’s program of courses.

Year 2  First Year M.B.A. Core (September to December) 12 M.B.A. Post-Core graduate modules (January to June) Internship (June to August) Professional Development Program as per the full-time M.B.A. program [39 credits]

Years 3 & 4 Law courses [51 credits]

MBA credits 6

Total credits:  134

J.D./MAPPS FULL-TIME PROGRAM:

Students in the combined J.D./M.A.P.P.S. program should complete 86 Law credits towards their J.D. (excluding IAR 500) and 30 credits towards their MA in Asia Pacific Policy Studies.

J.D./MAPPS 2nd and 3rd Years:

All the requirements of the regular J.D. 2nd and 3rd year program must be fulfilled, including compulsory courses, with only the following changes:

  • Students enrolled in the combined degree program who complete the M.A.P.P.S. Core Course (IAR 500) required for the M.A.P.P.S. degree will receive six credits toward completion of their J.D. degree, which will be counted as the maximum six credits of non-Law courses permitted under the J.D. course requirements.
  • Students enrolled in the combined degree program who complete six credits of Faculty of Law course work acceptable to their respective J.D. and M.A.P.P.S. program supervisors will receive credit for these courses toward both the J.D. and M.A.P.P.S. degrees.
  • Law course electives select from:  LAW 337, LAW 338, LAW 342, LAW 432, LAW 322, LAW 319, LAW 305, LAW 307, LAW 391.

Module Curriculum Schedule:

Year 1 (September – April) Students complete required first-year J.D. curriculum [35 credits].

Year 2 (September – April) Students complete M.A.P.P.S. core course (IAR 500) [6 credits].  Students complete required upper year courses for J.D. [12-18 credits].  Students begin completion of elective requirements for M.A.P.P.S. [6 credits] and J.D. [up to 8 credits].

Year 2 (April – September) Students complete thesis or practicum requirements for M.A.P.P.S. [12 credits].

Year 3 (September – April) Students complete remaining elective course requirements for J.D. and M.A.P.P.S. [28 (J.D.)/6(M.A.P.P.S.)]

Total credits:  A maximum of 119 (J.D. up to 89/M.A.P.P.S. 30)
