CFLS Members
Many students who come to law school have academic and activist backgrounds in feminism and social justice while others develop an interest during their legal studies. At UBC Law, we have worked to create a space in which these commitments will be respected, encouraged and developed further in a legal education context.
The Centre for Feminist Legal (CFLS) provides opportunities for students, scholars and the wider feminist legal community to come together, build networks, collaborate on research and exchange ideas. The work of the CFLS has been significant in ensuring that feminist and social justice issues remain visible at UBC Law, and that the law school remains connected to the larger community.
We support students by providing a safe, inclusive space, volunteer opportunities and services with particular attention paid to the issues facing those with systemic forms of marginalization.
Students of all genders who support the aims of a feminist centre and who value equity and social justice are welcome to become involved in the CFLS community.
Members of the wider feminist community are invited to contact the CFLS if you are interested in presenting a lecture, collaborating with the law faculty, or contributing to our newsletter, LawFemme.
Chair in Feminist Legal Studies
UBC Law's endowed Chair in Feminist Legal Studies, established in 1992 (first endowed as the Chair in Women and the Law), plays an integral role in reinforcing and strengthening feminist legal studies in the Faculty and helps foster and support scholarship and learning directed toward the ongoing process of social change in relation to the position of women in Canadian society. Professor Susan B. Boyd is the first incumbent of the Chair, and is also Director of the Centre for Feminist Legal Studies.
